2009 Hong Kong and Shenzhen Bi-City Biennale of Urbanism\ Architecture BYOB "Bring Your Own Biennale"

Venue: West Kowloon Waterfront Promenade
4/12/2009~27/2/2010

In order to have a look of "Padding Home", the artwork that my sister had assisted to create it, I went to West Kowloon Waterfront Promenade to visit BYOB with my friends.

West Kowloon Waterfront , an
West Kowloon, an out-of-the-way piece of land, a place full of dreams and expectations , an amorphous cultural district....
I took my camera to this barren area with mixed feelings. Although the biennale started, but some exhibitors were still preparing for their works. Compared with the quantity of artworks shown in the catalogue, there should be 50% of exhibits were not appearing. According to a security guard, the remaining exhibits would be ready later, probably after the East Asian Games. The exhibition venue was a large piece of open area. I am not sure that whether the grasses were sprayed by herbicides or because of winter, the haystacks were in yellow colour.

The exhibits were scattered around, exposed to wind and rain. Artworks were not jailed in the museum and only appreciated by people who are highly educated any more; they were displayed like the recreation facilities in the playground, they were allowed to be touch, played and they offered spaces for people to take rest.

Sustainable development, urban redevelopment, environmental protection, Hong Kong's city planning were the themes of the exhibits. It triggered reflection, stimulated creation, encouraged extendable creation...BYOB integrated the community and the surrounding urban landscape. There were some similarities between BYOB and the
Echigo-Tsumari Art Triennial.

An artwork the involves visitor's participation. Visitors write the place they belong to on the card provided, and then clip it on the stick. This artwork records where the visitors are from.

A smelly farm. It introduces a new cultivation method in urban area.

Packs of drink labeled "urban rethink" are taken. The characteristics of community are being weathered on account of urban redevelopment.

An artwork which placed the sign"M+"

The extended life form of the abandoned chairs.

The real scene of this installation was of a big difference from what was shown in the catalogue. There were less windwills in the real scene.

Yes, it is just a dream.

This is my first bilingual post. I do this so as to keep contact with my english speaking friends and forcing myself to improve english..welcome any comments on the translation.
